Chennai, Nov 25 (UNI) India's new number one Somdev Devvarman, number two, Prakash Amritraj and Czech Republic's Lukas Dlouhy have been given wild cards for the singles main draw of Chennai Open 2009, to be held at the Nungambakkam stadium here from January 5 - 11.
According to a press release, IMG has decided to offer Somdev (world number 201) and Prakash Amritraj (world number 204), the first two wild cards for the Chennai Open, the 450,000 dollars, prize money ATP International Series tournament.
The third wild card has been offered to another rising star from Czech Republic, Lukas, who will be making his first appearance at the Chennai Open.
Lukas, incidentally, will also be partnering Indian legend Leander Paes in the doubles draw.
Confirming his participation Amritraj said, ''I am delighted to be given an opportunity once again to participate at the Chennai Open, 2009. I have always performed well in the tournament as it is more of a home-coming of sorts.'' However, Somdev said, ''I am very excited to participate for the first time at the Chennai Open 2009. I was hoping to participate this time. I will try and win some matches. It is a good opportunity for me to showcase my talent in front of some tennis greats.'' Fernando Soler, Head- IMG Tennis Worldwide and Tournament Director, Chennai Open 2009 said, ''players like Somdev and Prakash have made India proud on a number of occasions and they will get an opportunity to showcase their talent, playing alongside the likes of Davydenko, Wawrinka, Carlos Moya and others.'' The 25 year-old Lukas, a professional Czech tennis player on the ATP Tour, had reached the third round of the men's singles in 2006 French Open.
He had won the single challenger at Bronx and reached the finals at Prague.
