Itanagar, Nov 24 (UNI) With the theme ''Save the environment Show Concern'', the Walkathon 2008 was organised to create awareness on protecting and conserving the environment, prevent manmade calamities in the state, climate change and promote cleanliness.
It was organised by United Mothers Union of Itanagar here yesterday and received tremendous response from participants from all walks of life.
State Forest and Environment Minister N Tingkhatra, addressing the participants, called for protection and preservation of the environment and said one must respect nature.
''We are facing calamities like floods and landslides, erosion ever year that claimed lives and properties because of negligence by human beings resorting to reckless cutting of trees, obstructing drainage and rampant deforestation,'' he pointed out.
While advocating for preservation of rich flora and fauna, the minister urged all to follow norms while construction of roads and not to obstruct drainage to avoid manmade calamities.
''We harm nature and so nature too harms us,'' he added.
