Puducherry, Nov 24 (UNI) Two persons were killed and three others injured and several areas inundated as heavy rains continued to lash Puducherry and its suburbs for the third successive day today under the impact of the low pressure over the Bay of Bengal.
Police said Valli of Perambai near here died as the wall of her house collapsed and fell over her last night. She was brought to the Villinaur Primary Health Centre and then to the Government General Hospital here. However, she died on the way to the hospital.
An unidentified man who was walking on the road with an umbrella was electrocuted when the top of his umbrella came into contact with snapped live wire. A couple and another man sustained injuries in rain related incidents at Reddiyarpalayam and Mettuppalayam here last night.
Meanwhile, fishermen were kept away from venturing into the sea.
However, two youths, who took their fibre boat and went for fishing on the shore areas had a miraculous escape when their boats capsized at the estuary and the fishermen from the shores pulled them out from the water. They, however, lost their nets.
Meanwhile, most of the tanks and lakes here were fasting filling up, While, Chitteri, Manapet and several other lakes were almost full, Bahour lake with 3.6 meter capacity was having 1.92 metre water in it. Kalamandapam, Antharanguppam, Panyadikuppam and Vayyapuri Nagar, were among others submerged and efforts were on by the Villinaur commune panchayat to pump out water.
The causeway, connecting Koonichampet and Manalippet was submeged, causing hardships to the people to reach Manalipet. Also the causeway at Thiruvakkara and the bed-dam at Silikkarippalayam and several acre of crops in Koonichampet were submerged.
Meanwhile, rain continued to lash Puducherry without any respite.
