Tripura: 2 held for distributing cash to refugee voters
Agartala, Nov 24: Altogether two supporters of Independent candidate of Damparangpui in West Mizoram were arrested for allegedly distributing cash among Reang refugees living in different camps of North Tripura.
Police identified the accused as Lalkhai Changa and Mumki and recovered Rs five lakh from their possession. The duo were sent to jail today.
Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a search in the camp and found them motivating the voters by distributing cash in favour of Vonga Mizo, an Independent candidate from the Damparangpui reserve forest area.
The duo have admitted their crime, police said, adding there were reports that different political parties had been trying to motivate the voters by various illegal means.
Meanwhile, addressing a rally in the refugee camps yesterday, senior Congress leader and Union Minister B K Handik has assured to send 35,000 Reang refugees to Mizoram, if the Congress comes to power in the next election.
He lashed out the Zoramthanga-led MNF government for rampant corruption and underdevelopment and said the ruling government in the state had done injustice with Reang refugees.
