Bhubaneswar, Nov 23 (UNI) A fiery spell of seam bowling by Basant Mohanty (7 for 27) helped host Orissa skittle out Punjab for paltry 60 runs on the opening day of their Ranji Elite Group A match at the Railway Stadium here today.
In reply Orissa was 148 for five at the close of play.
Earlier, winning the toss and putting Punjab to bat, Orissa seamers Basant Mohanty and Debashish Mohanty struck early with the first wicket of Punjab falling at only 2 runs on the board.
Helped by strong breeze, the two Orissa seamers had Punjab batsmen in trouble right through the first session of the play. At the first drinks of the break Punjab were already seven wickets down with just 36.
The local crowds cheered the host team at the newly laid out Railway stadium which was holding the Ranji trophy match for the first time.
Pankaj Dirwani was only the batsman from Punjab who put up some resistance remaining unbeaten for 23. None of the other batsmen could reach double figures.
While Debashis Mohanty claimed two wickets for 18 runs, Basant Mohanty scalped seven wickets conceding 27 runs.
Orissa began disastrously losing both their openers early.
Reeling at 13 for 2, Orissa was in deep trouble when Niranjan Behera and Subit Biswal put up a rescue act.
Niranjan went on to score 74 before being trapped lbw by Gagandeep Singh and Subit Biswal scored a half century (54) before being bowled by Siddharth Kaul.
At the close of play, Prabhanjan Mallick (1) and P.Jayachandra (0) were on the crease.
