New Delhi, Nov 23 (UNI) In a harsh criticism of the UPA government's handling of the economy in the wake of global meltdown, the BJP today listed at least six measures to check the soaring prices, prevent massive retrenchments and layoffs and create employment opportunities.
''It is surprising that the Prime Minister despite being an economist, has not taken a single step towards the government investment in infrastructural development, and had not slashed the prices of petrol and kerosene to bring down the inflation which could give relief to the 'aam aadmi' and the consumers,'' said party general secretary Arun Jaitley here.
At a press conference, Mr Jaitley dwelt at length as to how the then A B Vajpayee government had come out with a massive Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana and the National Highway Project which went a long way to tide over the financial crisis.
Stressing that the Congress-led coalition was still ''grappling'' with the financial crisis leading to massive retrenchments, closures and lay offs, Mr Jaitley said the government could not absolve itself of its responsbility on the issue.
He wanted to know what prevented the government from lowering the banks and house loan rates which he said would promote economic activity in the construction, steel, cement and related spheres.
Still worse, the prices are not coming down. And the nearly nine per cent inflation is not acceptable for any economy,'' the BJP leader added.
