Madras, Kannur Universities enter finals

Kannur, Nov 22 (UNI) Madras University and Kannur University entered the finals of All India Inter University Volleyball Championship for women here today.

Kannur University beat SRM University, Chennai, in a straight sets 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-17) and in the second semifinals from Pool-B, Madras Univeristy beat Anna University in a straight sets 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-17). Only some tough encounter was seen in first set made by SRM.

SRM international player M Sajini created many points and captain Nissy Eepen's all-round performance helped to bring up a tight match in the first set, but they lost control of the last stages.

For defending champions, Kannur University international players V Soumya, Captain Minimol Abraham, Anila Zachria's floater services and powerful smashes, Tiji Praksash's services and Libero M K Jiji's back ward support help them to easily him the match. Kannur University took advantage in the match due to lack of effective blocks from SRM. After the first set, Kannur University took total the control. Kannur University also beat SRM University in the South-west zone Inter University semifinal league and upto the finals of the All India Inter University.

In the second match between Madras and Anna Universities, captain Kalaivani's all round performance, Maheswari's drop shots and Jishma's counter attack earned points for winners and for Anna University, Sarayoo Vijayan's jump service and smashes and, C Karthika's flaoting services scored for the losers.

In the South west zone Inter university semifinal league matches, Madras beat Anna University by 3-0.

All the Universities from North-East zone could not enter the semi finals in the All India Inter University Championship.

In the last night league matches, Punjab University beat Kolkata University 25-20, 25-12, 18-25, 25-16 and Madras University beat SRM University by 25-17, 25-17, 25-17.
