Chennai: Uneducated workers to get skill certificates

Thousands
of
students
in
March
across
the
country
will
be
preparing
for
the
examinations
that
will
test
their
skills
and
lead
to
certificates,
diplomas
and
degrees.
This
March,
thousands
of
uneducated
workers
will
find
their
skills
being
recognised
with
certification
for
the
first
time.
The
Indira
Gandhi
National
Open
University
has
started
to
implement
the
Assessment
and
Certification
of
Prior
Learning
programme,
recently
approved
by
the
Union
Ministry
of
Labour.
The
university
is
in
the
process
of
developing
the
tools
needed
to
test
candidates
and
the
first
level
of
certification
will
be
rolled
out
by
March
2009,
according
to
Vice-Chancellor
V
N
Rajasekharan
Pillai.
The
target
is
to
certify
one
lakh
people
per
year,
he
added.
