New Delhi, Nov 21 (UNI) Concerned over the reported killing of a journalist in Manipur, the Centre has sought report from the Manipur Government about the incident.
Taking action on the complaint of the Editors Guild of India, the Home Ministry has asked the Manipur government to send a detailed report about the killing of Rishikant Singh, a young journalist working with Imphal Free Press.
The killing has led to uproar among journalists of the state and the Journalists Association of the state has stopped work due to which no newspapers are being published in the state now.
They had appraoched the Editors Guild of India whose Chairman Rajdeep Sardasai wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh following which the Home Ministry asked the state government to send its report at the earliest.
The Guild had expressed concern over over the deteriorating situation in Manipur regarding the safety and independence of editors and journalists and demanded immediate action by both the central and state governments to protect the media in the state and nab the killers of Rishikant.
The Guild said It was shocked by the killing of the young journalist on November 17,which is the latest in the series of killing of five journalists in Manipur.
Agitated newspapers editors and journalists have suspended publication of newspapers seeking protection, and speedy and impartial investigation to find the killers of Rishikant Singh.
