US cagers survive Rest scare; women champs SEC Railway crash out

Mumbai, Nov 20 (UNI) Shooting For Success (USA) survived a strong challenge from Rest of India before fashioning an exciting 94-80 win in their opening match, in the 4th All India UPL Savio Cup Basketball Tournament here today.

Combining brilliantly, with spearhead David Jones at the helm, SFS powered their way in the third and fourth quarters to snatch the match away from a fighting Rest.

The visiting squad gave the Indians a glimpse of the high quality of basketball played in the US, with a supremely confident Jones, popularly known as DJ, exhibiting his brilliant professional skills and capping a rewarding evening with 38 points that included a remarkable 11 three-pointers that delighted the packed stands.

Earlier, defending champions ONGC registered an impressive 71-63 win to shock Services and send the national champions crashing to their second defeat in as many ties in the five-team men's round robin league.

Savio Cup women's champions in the first two editions and last year's runners-up Southern Railway sealed their place in the final following a convincing 78-48 verdict over defending champions South East Central Railway for their second win in as many matches in the four-team round robin league.

SEC Railway crashed out of the competition following their second defeat in as many outings, with Delhi and Maharashtra being the other teams in the fray for a berth in the final.
