Mohan Bagan defeats Vasco 2-1 in I League

Margao, Nov 20 (UNI) A second half 54th minute goal by substitute Lal Kamal Bhowmick enabled Mohan Bagan to get better of a fighting bottom placed Vasco Sports club 2-1 and gained full points in the ONGC I League Football Championship match here at the Nehru stadium Fatorda today.

Rakesh Masihere in the 32nd minute and substitute Lal Kamal Bhowmick in the 54th minute scored for Mohan Bagan. Lal Nunpuia scored for Vasco in the 29th minute.

With this win, Mohan Bagan increased their points tally to 15 points from nine outings, with four wins, three draws and two defeats. Vasco remained with same two points at the bottom, registering seven defeats in as many matches.

In an evenly balanced first half, Vasco displayed improved showing. Mohan Bagan came with a first good move initiated by Jose Ramerez Barreto and passed to Ishfaq Ahmed but timely clearance by Vasco's Elvin Ferandes rescued his team from any damage.

Vasco had a chance to move ahead in the 15th minute when Agnelo D Souza sent a good pass to Minino Fernandes, who only had to beat the rival goalkeeper, shot over the bar and wasted a sitter.

Then in the 20th minute, Bagan ace striker Bhaichung Bhutia gave a well measured pass to Barreto, whose shot was brilliantly saved by Rival goalkeeper Laximikant Kattimani.

Vasco shot into the lead in the 29th minute through Lal Nunpuia, when Agnelo D'Souza unleashed a shot. Bagan Goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee moved forward and blocked the ball, which rebounded towards Nunpuia, who controlled the ball and neatly placed into the net over the goalkeeper's head to make it 1-0.

Stung by an early debacle, Bagan bounced back into the play and restored the parity in the 32nd minute of the first half through Rakesh Masihera. It was a freekick shot by Marcos Pereira which was neatly headed by Rakesh to make it 1-1.

A minute before the breather, Vasco could have increased their lead, Abhisek Yadav, who only had to beat the rival goalkeeper on the run and did not have a clear look at the goal shot in haste and wasted a good chance.

After both the teams were tied 1-1 at the breather, Mohan Bagan increased their lead in the 54th minute through substitute Lal Kamal Bhowmick, who came in place of Ishfaq Ahmed. Bhowmick after collecting the ball from Barreto dodged the rival defenders and shot into the net to make it 2-1.

Vasco had a chance to level the score in the 75th minute but rival goalkeeper brought a fine save off a header from Agnelo D'Souza.

Mohan Bagan's Rakesh Masihera was adudged the man of the match today for his fine performance.
