Aizawl, Nov 20 (UNI) The 2008 Mizoram Assembly elections would witness a record-breaking nine women candidates, thanks to the campaign of Women Welfare Federation with a moral support from the state's largest women body Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl.

Most of the political parties have fielded women candidates as their official candidates.

The ruling Mizo National Front has fielded former minister Mrs Lalhlimpuii in Hrangturzo constituency while the Congress has pitted its Mahila president Mrs Zothankimi in Aizawl West-II.

The UDA fielded Ms H Lalhmingthangi, a 32-year-old theologian in Champhai South constituency against MNF supremo and chief minister Zoramthanga.

The BJP has pitted two women candidates Mrs C Lalnunziri and Mrs Ramfangzauvi in Aizawl North-II and Kolasib constituency respectively.

The Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) also has two women candidates in Mrs R Lalrinmawi and Mrs Lalthuammawii who are contesting from Kolasib and Lunglei South respectively.

Lok Bharati has also fielded Mrs. Vanlalhmingchhuangi in Chalfilh constituency.

The election campaign has gained momentum but comparatively low-key than the previous ones due to the 'thou-shall-not' diktaks of the Church-sponsored Mizoram People's Forum.
