Good day for India as men's, women's teams win matches

Dresden (Germany), Nov 20 (UNI) It turned out to be a good day for India as their men and women teams chalked out identical 2.5-1.5 wins over Bosnia-Herzegovina and Italy respectively in the sixth round of the 32nd chess Olympiad here.

With this win, the Indian men are placed at joint third place with 10 points while top seed Russia and Armenia, with 11 points each are the joint leaders.

In the women section, the Indians are at joint sixth place with nine points while China with 12 points are the leader at this stage followed by United States.

Krishnan Sasikiran defeated Predrag Nikolic to help India lead against Bosnia-Herzegovina, however, three other Indians drew their matches.

P Harikrishna held Borki Predojevic to a draw, while higher ranked Surya Shekhar Ganguly and Sandipan Chanda were frustrated by Ibro Saric and Dalibor Stojanovic respectively as they were forced to play for draw.

Among the women, in-form Swati Ghate and Mary Ann Gomes won their respective matches to ensure India's win as Asian Champion Tania Sachdev suffered her first defeat in the tournament losing to Olga Zimina (Italy).

World junior girls' champion D Harika's played yet another draw on the top board after she was held by Elena Sedina.
