Puducherry, Nov 20 (UNI) Communist Party of India (CPI) National Council Member R Viswanathan today demanded that the Puducherry administration run the medical college here, instead of handing it over to the Employees States Insurance Corporation(ESIC).

Talking to newspersons here, Mr Viswanathan said following a demand from all political parties jointly here, the Planning Commission had sanctioned a Government Medical College for Puducherry and the construction works started. However, due to dissensions within the parties, it was decided to hand over the building to the ESIC.

The CPI leader said a vigilance enquiry into the medical college issue proved beyond doubt that there was no corrouption in it and it only commented that the officials should have planned the project transparently, adding, the Chief Secretary had received a letter on the issue from the Union Home Ministry.

He said the college could function with an additional Rs 80 crore, but the administration spent Rs 45 lakh by engaging a private consultant to prepare an estimate, which spoiled the entire scheme.

Steps shoul be taken to commence the classes in the next accademic year, he added.
