Chennai, Nov 20: Forest Minister N Selvaraj and Mayor M Subramanian visited north Chennai on Wednesday, Nov 19 to monitor the growth of saplings recently planted as part of the urban afforestation programme. They visited parts of Tondiarpet Corporation zone, including Union Carbide Colony, Venkateswara Nagar, Sriram Nagar, Narayanasamy Thottam and Manali Road.
Mr. Selvaraj said the afforestation programme has been extended to other cities, including Coimbatore, Madurai and Salem. With an increasing urban population, the trees would help to control air pollution, he said. Mayor M. Subramanian said that about 1,000 saplings would be planted in each of the 10 Corporation zones this year.
