Shiv Sena delegation meets Governor on cane growers problems
Mumbai, Nov 18 (UNI) A 20-member delegation of Shiv Sena, led by Executive President of the party Uddhav Thackeray and Leader of the Opposition Ramdas Kadam, today met Maharashtra Governor S C Jamir to seek his intervention to mitigate the problems faced by sugarcane growers in the state.
The leaders narrated the condition of cane growers in Western parts of the state and Marathwada region and said the situation in the regions had deteriorated significantly. They also took up the cause of cotton growers from north Maharashtra, Vidarbha and Marathwada, who were also suffering hardships.
They wanted the Governor to intervene under Article 213 of the Constitution of India and direct the state government to declare a Minimum Support Price of Rs 1,500 per tonne for sugarcane with a recovery percentage of nine and an extra Rs 200 per percentage of additional recovery.
The delegation further requested that sugar factories, having less than nine per cent recovery, be given subsidy to mitigate the Minimum Support Price.
Dr Jamir assured the delegation that the issues will be brought to the notice of Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.
