Kolkata, Nov 18 (UNI) A two-judge bench of Calcutta High Court today rejected the plea of three police officials seeking extension of bail in the Rizwanur Rahman case.
A special court had issued arrest warrants against three police officials - Ajay Kumar, Krishnendu Das and Sukanti Chakrabortty - in the case.
They were earlier arrested and released hours later on a lower court order.
They moved a petition before the High Court challenging the arrest warrant.
The two-judge bench, comprising Justice Amit Talukdar and Justice P S Banerjee, rejected the petition on the ground of the charges against them in the Rizwanur case.
The prosecution said the police officials were charged with abetting the suicide of Rizwanur Rahman, which is a major crminal offence under the Indian Penal Code.
The prosecution also said the police officials had now no alternative but to surrender before the court or they would be arrested.
The Supreme Court will hear the plea of industrialist Ashok Todi, the prime accused in the Rizwanur case, challenging the CBI chargesheet against him on November 25.
A Kolkata court had issued arrest warrant against Todi. However, the Supreme Court asked the CBI not to arrest Todi till it heard his plea.
