Stop military air to Sri Lanka: AITUC to govt

Puducherry, Nov 17: The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) urged the Union Government to intervene and find a political solution to the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka.

Addressing a press conference here AITUC State President and CPI National Council member R Viswanathan, MLA said a resolution urging the Centre to stop military aid to the island nation was adopted at the 16th state conference of the union held on Sunday, Nov 16.

Another resolution urged the administration to get Rs 500 crore from the Centre to modernise the AFT, Swadeshi and Sri Bharathi textile mills here and set up readymade garment units in the premises of the mills, he added.

Resolutions urging the administration to take steps to generate electricity in the Union Territory to tide over the power shortage, introduction of an act to prevent smuggling of rice and other food grains from Puducherry, setting up of the fifth pay commission for the cooperative employees, an interim relief of Rs 3,000 to them and setting up of a welfare board for the unorganised sector labourers here instead of the welfare association, were among the other resolutions adopted, he said.
