New Delhi, Nov 16 (UNI) An unbeaten 207-run third wicket stand between Ajinkya Rahane (151) and Amol Mazumdar (78) provided Mumbai an early advantage against defending champions Delhi on the first day of the Ranji Trophy Super League Group 'A' match here today.
At stumps, Rahane and Mazumdar were going strong to take the visitors to 279 for two and none of the Delhi bowlers seemed to trouble the two batsmen who joined each other at 72 for two.
The visitors, after electing to bat first, started cautiously as Delhi bowlers used the morning conditions well and bowled a probing line.
Sahil Kukreja (10) was the first casualty for the visitors as Parvinder Awana forced an edge from the batsman which went straight to the wicket keeper Puneet Bisht.
Captain Wasim Jaffer (29) stitched 49 runs for the second wicket with Rahane but with team score at 72, the Mumbai skipper fell to Sumit Narwal.
However, after that it was Mumbai duo of Rahane and Mazumdar all the way as the two batsmen defied the Delhi bowling to pile on a masive partnership between themselves.
Rahane played some exceptional shots all around the wicket and once he got his eye in, he looked in ominous form striking 22 boundaries in his 245-ball stay at the wicket.
Mazumdar too, gave able assistance to Rahane and was watchful to frustrate the home team bolwers who had to fetch leather throughout the day.
Mazumdar's 78 off 163 balls had nine fours in it and he did not look to go after the bowling as he fetched majority of his runs through singles and doubles.
The home team, which has three points in its kitty, did bowl a nagging line but the Mumbai batsmen were cautious enough not to give away the advantage to Delhi.
Delhi captain Aakash Chopra tried as many as seven bowlers but failed to get a break through after Narwal and Awana had managed to scalp two wickets for the home team.
