Orissa 235 for six on day one

Sambalpur, Nov 16 (UNI) A fine opening partnership of 125 runs by captain S S Das and Bikash Pati saw Orissa reach 235 for 6 at close on the first day of the Ranji Elite Group A match at the V S S Stadium here today.

Putting to bat by Rajasthan captain Venu Gopal Rao, Orissa opener Das and Pati led a solid foundation, scoring briskly and completing their half century.

Pati, who stroked the ball all around the wicket and scored 72 off just 109 balls, which included 12 fours and two sixes, fell to Venu Gopal Rao.

Das on the other hand was more cautious scoring 74 off 127 balls before being claimed by Sumit Mathur.

The loss of openers triggered a minor batting collapse with Paresh Patel and Subit Biswal being dismissed for 0 and 3 respectively.

Orissa, who were 125 for no loss, suddenly collapsed to 163 for 4 Niranjan Behera and Haladhar Das stuck together a partnership before Behera fell to Vivek Yadav after making 36 of 130 balls.

Samir Mohanty, who walked in to replace Behera, failed to open his score as he was trapped LBW by Vivek Yadav.

Orissa was 227 for six at close with Haladhar holding the fort on 43 and Debashish Mohanty not out two.

For the visitors, Sumit Mathur, Vivek Yadava and captian Venu Gopal Rao claimed two wickets each.
