Imphal, Nov 16: On Sunday, Nov 16 National Press Day was observed at the Press Club here. It was organised by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations.
State Information Minister T N Haokip inaugurated the function by lighting lamps.
The minister, speaking on the occasion, said the media in our country was not absolutely free as in some countries like Britain.
''The government-run media like DDK, AIR are not functioning independently,'' he added.
''The people should understand that the media belongs to all, not to some individual or organisations. We should also appeal to all, not to unnecessarily harass the media. We need a free press to ensure that democracy survives,'' he further observed.
P Bhorot, Commissioner, Information said the government should help the press and vice versa.
''There will be chaos if there is no cooperation between the media and the government. Even within the government agencies problems arise if there is no coordination and cooperation,'' he added.
A discussion on the relationship among government, people and mass media relationship was also held as part of the observation.
