KMC resumes octroi collection after fortnight
Kolhapur, Nov 16 (UNI) The Kolhapur municipal corporation (KMC) today resumed octroi collection after a gap of a fortnight since the imposition of cess duty by abolishing it.
Maharashtra government, abolishing octroi duty of 'D' category municipal corporations including KMC had imposed cess duty from November first in the state. It created panic among the traders, and various organisations launched agitation here under the banner of Kolhapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry to oppose cess duty.
They refused to fill registration forms as part of the cess duty process.
Two meetings held between civic body officials and traders over the issue, did not yield any result and on November 14 KMC urged the Government to allow octroi collection work till the issue is resolved.
Kolhapur Mayor Uday Salokhe told UNI that they had no alternative except re-starting octroi collection as since the imposition of cess duty KMC incurred losses about three crore, which hampered development works in the city.
