Kerala boys and girls emerge champions

Mysore, Nov 16 (UNI) Kerala Boys and Girls emerged champions of the 24th Junior National Athletics Championships here today.

Kerala bagged total 87 medals including 35 golds, 31 silver and 21 bronze while Tamil Nadu boys and girls had become runners up with total 50 medals including 18 gold, 16 silver and 16 bronze medals.

Kerala boys under 20 bagged the championships while Uttar Pradesh, Harayana and Tamil Nadu boys under 18,16 and 14 declared champions respectively.

In the girls section, Kerala girls emerged champions in the girls under 20,18 and 16 while hosts Karnataka claimed the honour in the girls under 14 championships.

Kerala's Jitin Paul was declared individual championship with 1007 points in the boys under 20 while Maharashtra's Saba Bhagat (1056 points) secured individual championship under 18 while Sukhdev Singh of Haryana (966 points) and P Anburaj of Tamil Nadu (778 points points) emerged champions in the boys under 16 and 14 respectively.

Tintu Luka of Kerala declared the best athleties in the girls under 20 with 1051 points while G Gayathri of Tamil Nadu claimed the girls under 18 individual honour with 1028 points.

Ranjitha Mahanta of Orissa (992 points) and Ruma Sarkar of West Bengal (876 points) won the individual honours in girls under 16 and 14 years respectively.

Rohit Kumar of Uttar Pradesh has created a new national record in the javelion throw of boys under 18 with throwing the disc to 71.52 meters. The old record was in the name of Gurkirt Singh with 68.47 meters.

In the girls section under 18, Haryana's Anju Rathi achieved a new meet record with throwing the disc to 39.36 meters.
