TN: Cashier gets 3-year RI for embezzlement

Chennai, Nov 15: The Additional Special Judge on November 13 convicted S K Sathappan, assistant cashier, National Insurance Company and sentenced him to three-year Rigorous Imprisonment.

The CBI chargesheeted Sathappan for financial misappropriation to the tune of Rs 11.35 lakh. The court has also directed him to pay a fine of Rs 11.20 lakh.

According to the prosecution, Sathappan, while working as assistant cashier in National Insurance Company in Chennai during 1996-2001, committed a criminal breach of trust, displayed criminal misconduct, proved dishonest and misappropriated amounts totalling Rs 11.35 lakh, which was entrusted to him as cashier of the company.

After a tip-off, the CBI took up the investigation and registered six cases, four against Sathappan and two against N Sangeetha, another assistant cashier of the company. They filed six charge-sheets under various sections of IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act. The chargesheets were filed in 2003 and the trial commenced subsequently.

The Additional Special Judge for CBI cases, held Sathappan responsible for the offence and convicted him in all the four cases.

However, Sangeetha was acquitted by the court.
