Chandigarh, Nov 15 (UNI) The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has signed a contract with a Danish firm for development of Real-time Decision Support System (RTDSS) for operational management of Bhakra and Pong reservoirs.
The contract was signed yesterday under the World Bank-funded Hydrology Project Phase-II (HP-II) of the Ministry of Water Resources by BBMB Secretary R C Mahajan and Dr Alasdair Macdonald of DHI Water Environment Health specialising in water resources management.
U C Misra, Chairman, BBMB, Anil Arora, Member (Irrigation), N K Arora, Member (Power), Ajay Pardhan, Manging Director of DHI India and other senior officers of BBMB were present.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr U C Misra said the project, which would prove a milestone for the country, would provide BBMB with the latest technology, which would go a long way in optimum utilisation of available water resources.
The development of the RTDSS is the first such project in the country and would be a learing experience for implementation on other river basins throughout India in future, he said.
The proposed RTDSS would support operational decisions required at monthly, weekly, daily, shorter time intervals or longer planning horizons.
Such decisions would help in scheduling releases from the reservoirs for optimising water requirements of the beneficiary states that is Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan with optimum hydro-power generation, Mr Misra said.
He said the RTDSS would also help in issuing flood warning and provide rainfall and snowfall forecasting with the estimation of corresponding inflows into BBMB reservois.
The RTDSS would be supported by sophisticated data acquisition system, advanced communication system and modelling technologies.
