Surat, Nov 14 (UNI) The Gujarat government is in the process of creating a special team on the lines of ATS and Special Operation Group (SOG) to strengthen internal security in wake of rising terror strikes in the country.
According to sources, the special force, yet to be named, will comprise select officers of the police department from each district, who have undergone strict physical and mental tests.
Ten policemen of various ranks have already been chosen from the district after being trained at Police Training School in Vadodara for weapons usage, bomb detection and disposal. They were also taught primary level Karate, legal procedures and laws relating to terrorist cases.
''The main purpose of the training is to prepare a special anti-terrorist team in each district. The team will work in coalition with SOG to tackle terror activities and will support local police if they are investigating any such case. Since Anti-terrorism Squad does not exist in each district, this concept was considered,'' one of the cops who attended the training said on condition of anonymity.
They are now awaiting creation of independent team, their position and official appointments, the sources said.
''We are waiting for our assignments and office so that we can start work. The whole purpose of training would fail if this is not executed in time. We have returned from training since many days but majority of the cops who underwent the special training continue to work in their earlier postings,'' another police official, who also did not wished to be named, said.
