Srinagar, Nov 13 (UNI) Police burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disengage supporters of Congress and National Conference who clashed in Ganderbal Assembly constituency.
The NC president Omar Abdullah is seeking mandate from the seat.
Official sources said the supporters of Congress and NC clashed at village Barsoo under police station Khirbhawani in Ganderbal constituency this afternoon.
The supporters pelted stones and attacked each other with lathis, they said.
Sources said police had to intervene to disperse the warring group by resorting to lathicharge.
However, police had to burst teargas shells to control the situation as the supporters of Congress and NC continued attacking each other with stones.
About a dozen people were injured in the clash, they said adding that this was the first clash in the constituency, going to polls in the second phase on November 23.
Mr Omar, who lost to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Qazi Mohammad Afzal in 2002 polls, is again contesting from the same constituency represented by his father Dr Farooq Abdullah and grand father Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah since 1977 after the NC joined the national mainstream following Indira-Sheikh accord in 1975.
