Police mum over students' brutal clash in Chennai

Chennai, Nov 13: In a shocking incident on Wednesday, Nov 12 the Chennai police remained silent spectators during clashes between students of two opposite group at a local law collage. The police instead of trying to disperse the crowd stood by and watched crowd mercilessly beating a student near the Dr Ambedkar Law College gate in Chennai. The policemen were waiting for the College Principle's order to take control of the situation. Four students have been severely injured and the condition of two of these is said to be critical.

Only after some journalists interfered, the police helped to take the injured students to the hospital. Following the brutal incident, Tamil Nadu government ordered the senior police officials to probe into the matter. Chennai Assistant Police Commissioner was suspended along with the Police Inspector in charge.

Also police have on Thursday, Nov 13 arrested seven persons in connection with group clash. R Shekar, the Chennai Police Commissioner said, "ACP Narayanamurthy and inspector Sekar Babu have been suspended while four Sub-Inspectors have been transferred out of Chennai."

Police sources said that the clash broke out between the students (who belong to two different communities) of Dr Ambedkar Law College over a poster which did not carry the name of Dr Ambedkar.

The college principal in a complaint to police had stated that seven students were responsible for the incident.

An embarrassed Tamil Nadu government later on Thursday, Nov 13 ordered a judicial probe by a retired High Court judge into the clash between two groups of students of Dr Ambedkar Law college here and placed under suspension the college Principal and an Assistant Commissioner of Police for dereliction of duty.
