Vadodara, Nov 12 (UNI) Shrugging off slackness, Vadodara batsmen compiled 239 for four in their second innings after conceding a first innings lead of 51 to Uttar Pradesh at close of third day's play in their Ranji Trophy Super League match at the Motibaug Palace ground here today.
Replying to Vadodara first innings total of 235, the visitors who resumed batting this morning at 251 for eight, folded up their innings at 286 with a vital lead of 51 runs, thanks to a scintillating 50 by Praveen Kumar.
Kumar, who had demolished the hosts first innings with a five wicket haul, compiled his 50 off 55 balls with seven boundaries and a six before left-arm seamer Irfan Pathan bowled him to return an impressive figure of 33-8-85-6.
With only a day's play remaining, UP seemed to be in an advantageous position to clinch the tie on the basis of their first innings lead even as Vadodara had taken their overall lead to 188 with six wickets in hand.
In their second innings, Vadodara suffered an early jolt when UP seamer Bhuvnesh Kumar had the scalp of skipper Connor Williams for a duck with only 12 runs on the board. But the hosts consolidated their position with a 100-run partnership between opener Satyajit Parab (67.11x4) and Azhar Bilakhia (42,7x4) for the second wicket.
After Parab and Bilakhia left for the pavilion in quick succession falling prey to spinners Piyush Chawla (1/79) and Praveen Gupta (2/41) respectively, Rakesh Solanki who top scored with 71 in their first innings, retrieved the situation again with an unbeaten 60 which included five fours and a six.
Defying Md Kaif-led UP pace and spin attack Solanki along with keeper Pinal Shah (31) put on 50 runs for the fourth wicket and then produced another valuable 71 runs with Satrunjay Gaekwad (batting 28) in their almost one-and-half hours unbeaten fifth wicket partnership.
