Midnapore, Nov 12 (UNI) West Midnapore District Magistrate N S Nigam today admitted police excess on the tribals in Lalgarh after the November two landmine explosion near Kalaichandi canal, about four km from the district headquarters.

Talking to newspersons here, he said, ''I assure that all innocent people, who have been arrested so far, will be released and not be harassed any more.'' ''I have invited all the concerned for a mutual discussion and I do promise that the administration will show utmost restraint henceforth,'' he added.

''We seek cooperation from all the political parties and religious outfits concerned to solve the problem peacefully,'' Mr Nigam stated.

Police Superintendent Rajesh Singh said, ''We are totally sure of the Maoist involvement in the landmine explosion. Three of the arrested have confessed to their involvement.'' Mr Singh also invited local tribals to come to the discussion table with the district administration as no discussion was possible if demonstration continued.

He further said. ''Police are ready to meet the tribal leaders whereever they want.'' Meanwhile, the situation in Lalgarh remained tense as the tribals continued digging up roads at several points, disrupting flow of essentials and snapping communication system.
