Mohammed Nasheed sworn in as President of Maldives

Male, Nov 11 (UNI) Mohammed Nasheed was today sworn in as the President of Maldives on the occasion of this country's Republic Day.

Chief Justice Abdulla Saiyed administered the oath to Mr Nasheed at a function at Dharu Baru Ge hall at Male.

However, the outgoing President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom did not attend the function.

'' The government which cannot deliver its commitments, loses opportunity to rule,'' Mr Nasheed said while praising the peaceful change of a 30-year-old regime.

Maldives has set an example for the world, he added.

'' Providing better transport facility, houses, advanced health facilities and controlling smuggling of narcotic substances would be my priority,'' the newly-elected President added.

Mr Nasheed announced 2000 Maldives Rufiyaa (Rs 7000) per month allowance to senior citizens above 65 years from January next.

He appealed to the people of the country for their support and said their dreams have turned into reality.

Indian Vice-President Mohammed Hamid Ansari and Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa were among the dignitaries who attened the swearing-in ceremony.
