Haryana girls go down figthing to Goa in U-19 National

Chandigarh, Nov 11 (UNI) Cluster V champions powerful Manipur secured full points as they defeated Cluster VII winners Tripura by 3-0 in a Group B quarter-final league of the seventh Girls Junior National Football Championship (Under-19) being played at the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Gurgaon today.

All three goals were scored in the first half.

After initial probings, Manipur opened up and snatch lead in the 12th minute through Basanti Devi. The Manipur girls continued to dominate and L Itarani scored their second goal in the 23rd minute.

Hardly had the cheers of their supporters had died down, N Meena Kumari rounded off the winners' tally in the 25th minute.

In the second quarter-final match in Group B, hosts Haryana went down fighting to Goa by a solitary goal scored by Snehal Morajkar in the 21st minute.

The Haryana girls played an attacking game throughout the match.

They failed to convert their territorial advantage into a goal.

After taking the lead, Goa played a defensive game. They defended their goal with a crowded defence. Consequently, the Haryana players found the Goa defence a hard nut to crack.

Star strikers of Haryana Mani and Shanti did their best but it was not their day today.

Tomorrow, Tamil Nadu would meet Orissa and Assam would clash with Jharkhand.
