Kurukshetra, Nov 10 (UNI) The five-day All India Inter-University Gymnastic and Malkhamb Championship began here today at the Kurukshetra University sports complex here.
Speaking after inaugurating the event, Rajya Sabha MP and former Pro-Vice Chancellor of Kurukshetra University Ram Prakash stressed the need and importance of increasing basic sports infrastructure to excel in the Asian, Commonwealth and Olympic Games to get gold medals for the country.
He also announced a grant of Rs 5 lakh to the host university for promotion of sports.
About 650 gymnasts, including 300 girls, from 65 universities of the country are participating in various events of Malkhamb and gymnastics, which will decide the fate of the trophy on the concluding day.
Students of Gurukul Vidyavihar presented various forms of Malkhamb and performed gymnastic feats on rope and mats, and girl students from Kurukshetra University also presented various forms of rhythmic gymnastic on the inaugural function.
Vice Chancellor R P Bajpai presided over the inaugural function.
