Gandhinagar, Nov 10 (UNI) Gift articles, received by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, will be put on auction to raise funds for the 'Kanya Kelavani Nidhi', a scheme for promoting girls' education in the state.
Official sources said here today that Mr Modi today deposited 1126 more gifts he had received from various sources to the government treasury and they will be auctioned publicly at different places in the state at a later date.
The Chief Minister had set a glittering example before the nation by organising public auction of gifts received by him since November 2001. With the aim to promote girl child's education, he has so far auctioned 5743 gift articles including gold and silver idols, artistic chariots, wrist watches, traditional arms, traditional apparels and shawls till last month and collected an amount of Rs 4.19 crore, which was remitted to the Kanya Kelavani Nidhi fund, sources said.
In the census 2001, Gujarat is at 15th rank in the area of literacy and in sphere of women-literacy it is at 21st rank.
Besides the revenue collected from the Auction of gift articles, Donations are also pouring in from the individual donors, Co-operative institutions, Non-Government institutions, Volunteer Organisations and other institutions.
The proceeds raised were utilised to give financial support to uplift girl's education, promote higher education studies and assist economically backward girls for higher education, the sources added.
