Chennai, Nov 10 (UNI) Runner-up Manipur suffered a reverse, as they lost their Group B match against Andhra Pradesh on the opening day of the 37th Women National Handball Championship which began here today.
It was an unexpected result as their long journey took the toll on the Manipur girls, who lost 12-22. Manipur trailed 5-9 at half-time.
But after the break, the Andhra Pradesh girls did not allow their rivals to settle and gradually enlarged the lead to put in beyond their counterparts from the North Eastern state.
However, hosts Tamil Nadu started their campaign on a winning note, thrashing a hapless Uttaranchal 17-6 (11-4 half time) in Group D.
Tamil Nadu is hosting the championship, being held on league cum knock-out basis, for the first time, Tamil Nadu Handball Association Secretary-General A Saravanan said.
After the league phase, the Quarterfinals and Semifinals would be held on November 14 and the final on November 15.
Earlier, the tournament, which has attracted entries from 24 States, was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy.
