Lucknow, Nov 10 (UNI) Ms Kusum Rai, rather a shocking candidate for the party and the political observers across Uttar Pradesh, today filed her nomination as BJP candidate for Rajya Sabha (RS) biennial polls due on November 21 in the state.
Ms Rai, given precendence over stalwarts like Bharatiya Janata Party president Rajnath Singh, general secretary Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and many others waiting in the wings, is the lone BJP candidate to contest Rajya Sabha polls.
A member of upper house of the state legislature, Ms Rai filed nomination on the last day of filing the nomination to biennial RS polls on ten seats.
Earlier, six Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Sitting RS member Veer Singh, former union minister and now BSP general secretary Akhilesh Das, Brajesh Pathak, Avtar Singh Karimpuri, Rajaram and Brijlal Khabari had filed nominations. Besides, two Samajwadi Party candidate Amar Singh and Ram Gopal Yadav had filed nominations.
Kusum Rai, a protege of BJP heavyweight Kalayan Singh, speaking to mediapersons after her nominations said her candidature was in the lines of BJP's policy to enhance women participation. She denied that she was given preference in view of the resentment of Kalyan Singh with the party which was quite evident in the recent past.
Mr Singh, though, was absent at the time of nomination. To which, the RS candidate of BJP said he was too big a leader to be present at the time of RS nomination but his experience would be sought as and when required.
