New Delhi, Nov 10 (UNI) Former cricketers today showered accolades on the Indian team for reclaiming the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and described it as a remarkable achivement.
''It is always great when India beats Australia and I think it was great to see the team perform as a unit,'' Chairman of the selection committe Krishnamchari Srikkanth said.
''The seniors were very consistent and yes, it also indicates that the team is adapting well to the transition phase.'' He further added that the players need to be protected so that the team does go into the 2011 World Cup with a winning combination.
''I am happy over Indian team beating the world's best squad on our soil. I must say that the wait is over and slowly the transition is taking place,'' he added.
Former chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar stated that beating the world champions was an oustanding feat.
''It is a great achievement, absolutely oustanding because Australia is a team which has been number one for the past 10-15 years,'' he said.
However, the former Indian skipper also added that challenges lie ahead for the team as maintaning the victory record would be a tough task.
''I hope that this Indian team now maintains its consistency and since they have become number one in the world at this moment, they must look to remain at the top,'' he said.
