Gangtok, Nov 10 (UNI) Five Kindergarten students were injured when a live detonator they were playing with exploded in a classroom today at Lingtam under Rongli subdivision in East Sikkim.
Police here said two children were playing with the mild explosive inside a classroom of Lingtam secondary school after the morning assembly when the explosive substance went off.
''Five students were injured in the incident and three of them have been referred to STNM hospital here in Gangtok,'' Sikkim Police DIG (Range) Akshay Sachdeva said.
Mr Sachdeva said as per preliminary information two of the students had somehow got hold of the detonator and were playing with it when it exploded.
The DIG said investigation was on to find out how the detonator reached the schoolgoing kids.
Rongli area in East Sikkim is currently witnessing a construction boom with road and hydel power projects currently under progress.
Police had also recovered a huge cache of detonators and gelatin in Rhenock area which is nearby Rongli earlier this year.
The needle of suspicion was towards the hydel power construction companies as there have been several incidents of explosive pilferage in the recent past.
