Surat, Nov 10 (UNI) A BJP councillor of Bardoli Municipality has resigned from the post after people of his ward objected to his becoming a father for the third time during his tenure, prompting a bypoll.
The by-poll to the general category seat of ward No 9 of the Municipality will be held on November 23 after Pritesh Patel resigned from the post on July 30. The local people had submitted a memorandum to district collector.
According to government rule 17/2005, any elected representative loses eligibility to continue in the position, if he/she becomes parent of the third child. The elected member should either submit his/her resignation or would be suspended by the government.
In 2005, Patel was elected as councillor from the ward. At that time he was the father of two children. In 2007, he fathered another son and since then was in controversy due to the law.
An inquiry had been ordered against Mr Patel by the District Collector on receiving the complaint. Mr Patel, apprehending that controversy would affect his political life, resigned from the post.
Following his resignation, district election department declared by-election for the post. BJP, Congress, NCP, MJP and independents have filed nominations for the November 23 bypoll.
