102 to vie for 10 Assembly seats in J

Jammu, Nov 10 (UNI) A total 102 candidates would contest for the first phase of Assembly elections for ten constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir, polling for which would be held on November 17.

''As many as 606,667 electors, including 294,145 female and 8,505 are service voters, would exercise their right to franchise at 1,066 polling stations,'' an official spokesman today said.

Ten constituencies in the four districts -- Bandipora, Kargil, Leh and Poonch -- are going to polls in the first phase.

The maximum number of 22 candidates would be contesting from Sonawari constituency in Bandipora district of north Kashmir, followed by the Bandipora Assembly segment with 19 candidates in the fray, the spokesman disclosed.

In the bordering Poonch district of western Jammu, the Poonch-Haveli constituency has 13 candidates, followed by Mendhar constituency with 12 candidates and Surankote constituency with 11 in the fray, he said.

The Gurez constituency in Bandipora district will see a six-cornered contest while the constituencies of Kargil, Leh and Zanskar (in Laddakh area) have five candidates each.

''The lowest number of four candidates are contesting from the Nubra constituency of Leh district,'' the spokesman added.
