Maoist guerillas vandalised Mahatma Gandhi's statue

Jamui, Nov 8 (UNI) Suspected Maoist guerillas today vandalised a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Jhanjha market area near here generating spontaneous protest among the local people.

Police said a gang of about ten armed guerillas shouting anti-government slogans arrived at the market place at around 1900 hrs and damaged the statue. They fled after committing the crime leaving behind several Maoist leaflets.

Soon police arrived and launched a search operation. But none could be arrested so far.

A case had been lodged in the local police station, situated about 40 km from the headquarters of this Maoists' dominated north Bihar district.

Shocked at the incident, local people protested against the police ''inaction'' to control the extremists in the areas. They also decided to install a new statue of the father of the nation on the same spot.
