30 % power should be earmarked for Daxina Kannada: Samiti
Udupi, Karnataka, Nov 8 (UNI) Jayasrikrishna Parisara Premi Samiti, a Mumbai based voluntary organisation advocating coal-based thermal power project to ease power shortage and help industrialisation, has strongly demanded the Nagarjuna Thermal Power Plant, coming up near Padubidre in Udupi Taluk, to earmark 30 per cent of the power generated for the Daxina Kannada District.
Addressing the press here, Samithi President T Jayakrishna Shetty said the plant would start producing power in 2010 and 30 per cent of the power produced should be given to the undivided district so that the residents were spared of the problem of frequent power cuts.
A memorandum has also been submitted to the Karnataka Minister for Energy K S Eshwarappa during his recent visit to famous Sri Mookambika temple at Kollur in the district.
In this connection, the Minister held discussions with the Secretary of Energy Department and is expected to take certain masures to consider the request favourably, Mr Shetty said adding that the undivided district required about 300 MW power to meet its requirements, He said the Samiti stood by the company during the times the project faced strong opposition. As a result, the unit was able to proceed towards getting completed and start power generation, he added.
