5 debt-ridden farmers commit suicide in Vidarbha
Nagpur, Nov 7 (UNI) At least five debt-ridden farmers committed suicide in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra during the past 24 hours, activists said today.
According to Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), a voluntary organisation working among farmers in the region, those who ended their lives included two from Yavatmal district and one each from Gondia, Akola and Washim districts. These farmers were in dire straits, because of the advent of pests on the crops of cotton and soybean in the region, a VJAS press release said.
