Thousand more post offices in NE
Agartala, Nov 6 (UNI) Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has taken initiative to upgrade the postal service in the Northeast by setting up 1000 more post offices in the region by next financial year.
Official sources here today said that presently 6,637 Post Offices were functioning in rural areas of the Northeast while 34,774 villages in the region did not have postal counters which hampered regular delivery of dak, collection of mail from letter-boxes and sale of stamps.
The non-existing post offices in the villages of the region were provided basic postal facilities through nearest existing post offices and other alternative means like Panchayat Sanchar Seva Kendras (PSSKs), officials stated adding that new Post Offices would be opened in a phased manner as per prescribed norms and availability of resources.
