London, Nov 6 : People who have suffered severe brain injuries and who are unable to speak or move are being given the first chance to communicate using just the "power of thought".

A groundbreaking system, developed by Dr Paul Gnanayutham, a researcher at the University of Portsmouth, uses patients' brainwaves, and eye and muscular movements to move a cursor on a computer screen.

It works via probes on a band worn round the head, picking up brainwaves and muscle and eye movements.

This can help them give simple answers, as well as control electrical devices and use the Internet, reports Scotsman.

Gnanayutham hopes to get more funding to make his system more widely available.
