'Futsal Friendzy' launched in Kochi

Kochi, Nov 6 (UNI) McDowell's Celebration today announced the launch of the 'Futsal Friendzy,' a tournament based on the new, fast paced and shorter version of football here.

The game is played between teams of five players, one of whom is a goalkeeper, on a smaller area with a smaller ball, which bounces less than regular football.

The tounament would be held across five football hotspots in the country -- Kolkata, Mumbai, Jaipur, Bangalore and Kochi-- over a period of 45 days, United Spirits Limited Business Head Mathew Xavier told reporters.

He said any number of teams could participate in the competition and the final would be held in Kolkata in the third week of December with the finalists playing against seclect players of the Mohun Bagan team.

''The highlight of the event will be participation of Mohun Bagan teams and icons like Baichung Bhutia and Jose Ramirez Barreto playing in the final match,'' he noted.

International players like I M Vijayan and Chuni Goswami would be part of the team selection panel and would be providing training to players from the southern and eastern regions respectively, he noted.

Speaking on the occasion, Vijayan said the event would augur well for the future of Indian football and would be an opportunity for emerging football players.

The fixture of the matches -- Kochi and Jaipur, November 23, Bangalore, November 30 and Mumbai and Kolkata, December 14.

Futsal, the only official form of indoor soccer approved by FIFA, is played with touchline boundaries on rectangular pitches and the match lasts for equal periods of 20 minutes.
