Fair Price Shop Agent fined by Consumer Court in Manipur

Imphal, Nov 6 (UNI) The Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum (Consumer Court) here today slapped fine on a Fair Price Shop Agent for selling rice at excessive price and showing discrepancy in its distribution.

The Forum issued an order directing a Fair Price Shop Agent to pay a sum of Rs 3,000 as exemplary cost and a sum of Rs 1,000 as cost of litigation to one Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) ration card holder for selling rice at Rs seven per kilogram, apart from distributing 10 kg of rice instead of 35 kg.

According to case dossier, Ingudam Indrakumar Singh, who was a resident of Yurembam Awang Leikaihere, filed a complaint against the Forum against Pheiroijam Rajen Singh, who hailed from Yurembam Awang Mamang Leikai, Imphal West District, a Fair Price Shop Agent.

The Fair Price Shop Agent was under an obligation to distribute 35 kilogram of rice at the rate of Rs 3.37 per kilogram to all the AAY cardholders, sources said.

The Deputy Commissioner Imphal West was also directed to keep a strict vigilance on the fair price shopkeepers to ensure that they complied with the instructions contained in the AAY card.

The Director of the Human Rights Law Network HRLN (Manipur), Meihoubam Rakesh said the case was filed at the initiative of the HRLN.
