'Expedite Land Reforms Act cases'

Puducherry, Nov 6: CPI National Council member and Puducherry unit President of the Bharathiya Kheth Mazdoor Union (BKMU) R Viswanathan, MLA on Thursday, Nov 6 urged the administration to exepdite cases pending before the courts under the Land Reforms Act. In a memorandum submitted to Lt Governor Govind Singh Gurjar, he said as the cases were pending, about 482 hecters of land could not be distributed to landless poor. If the cases were expedited, as many as 20,000 persons would get pattas.

Mr Viswanathan urged the the Governor to intervene to prevent the conversion of fertile lands into housing plots. He also brought to the notice of Mr Gurjar that agricultural labourers were not availing several welfare schemes like pension and free raincoats as no census of agricultural labourers was conducted so far and labourer's association was not functioning properly.

Talking to newspersons here Mr Viswanathan said the BKMU would take out a procession and hold a dharna in front of the office of the Director of Agricluture here tomorrow to press these demands.
