Kohima, Nov 5: A herd of wild elephants has created havoc in Bhandari area of Wokha district, bordering Assam.

The locals said, the pachyderms first entered the paddy fields and damaged crops. It also raided the orchards and vegetable gardens in the area and destroyed it, causing a huge loss to the farmers.

The herd is presently sheltering along the Yingri River of the area and gradually started entering in the villages, threatening human lives.

The locals had demanded the state government, especially the Forest department to immediately drive away the herd of elephants from the area to save the remaining cultivations and human lives.

Incidentally, Nagaland has no forest protection force so far, although Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio had announced in his Budget Speech to raise a Forest Protection Force with hundred members, which is yet to come up.
