Passi faces Vietnamese Thien in final

By Staff

Chandigarh, Nov 5 (UNI) Top seed Vishal Passi will meet second seed Nguyen Hoang Thien of Vietnam in the boys singles final while it will be an all-India affair in the girls singles final as top seed Tarrannum Handa crosses swords with sixth seed Samitha C Sai in the Asian Junior Circuit Tennis Tournament being played at the Sector 10 Tennis Stadium here.

In the boys singles semi-final matches, Passi, with ATF ranking of seventh, snuffed out the local challenge as he beat fourth seed Nishcay Rawat in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Wild card and second seeded Nguyen Hoang Thien of Vietnam also scored a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Passi and Nischal raised hopes of a tough match as both exchanged breaks in the first two games of both sets. However, Vishal Passi also broke Nischal in the third game to win the first set at 6-2.

Coming back onto the court for the second set, Nischay Rawal again broke Passi in the first set to take a 1-0 lead. Passi hit back in the next game and broke Nischay to level the score 1-1. Passi maintained pressure and broke the local lad in the seventh and ninth games to take the set and match.

Tarrannum Handa, ranked second in ATF Order of Merit, fully justified her top seed as she defeated eighth seed Parminder Kaur in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Sixth seed Samhitha C Sai, who had earlier shocked second seed Tamhita Gguyen of Philippines 7-6 (0), 6-0 in quarter-final, advanced to the final by beating third seed Mrinalini Alla in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the semi-final encounter.
